Discover CCAM

What Makes CCAM Unique

CCAM is focused on accelerating the development, maturation and deployment of advanced manufactiring technologies.

The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) exists to help members solve real-world manufacturing challenges and reduce the risk associated with the adoption of new solutions.

We combine the expertise of multidisciplinary teams with access to advanced manufacturing equipment and digital tools to enable rapid development, testing, and deployment of emerging technologies.

How We Work

We bring together proven methodologies, deep technical knowledge, and a collaborative network of partners to close the gap between research and production. Whether you’re scaling a new process or exploring next-generation technologies, CCAM provides the infrastructure and expertise to move from concept to implementation with confidence.

Tools & Capabilities

To support our members, we leverage an integrated ecosystem that includes:

  • Digitally-enabled test environments to simulate and monitor process performance
  • Manufacturing-scale equipment to validate technologies in production-relevant conditions.
  • Multidisciplinary engineering teams skilled in advanced manufacturing, data science, materials, and automation

Together, these tools allow us to understand, optimize, and scale manufacturing processes—helping our partners shorten development cycles and de-risk technology adoption.

Advancing coating technologies that enable critical defense systems and fuel-efficient solutions for a sustainable future

Since its founding in 2012, CCAM has led the advancement of cutting-edge coating technologies, using a digitally-enabled test bed environment to accelerate innovation far beyond what traditional manufacturing approaches can achieve. By integrating physical experimentation with real-time digital feedback, CCAM has built a comprehensive infrastructure to support the full lifecycle of coating system development—from rapid prototyping of component geometries to automated surface preparation, in-situ monitoring of spray processes, and onsite quality and performance testing under simulated operational conditions.

This unique combination of capabilities allows CCAM to dramatically shorten development timelines, enabling its members and partners to address complex challenges and deploy high-performance solutions across critical sectors including aerospace, defense, and nuclear energy.

Harnessing Digital Twin Technologies to Drive Precision, Compliance, and Confidence in Regulated Manufacturing

The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) is at the forefront of transforming subtractive machining through the integration of digital twin technologies, addressing the critical need for precision and traceability in high-stakes industries like aerospace, defense, and energy.

By embedding sensors and data analytics into CNC machining processes, CCAM enables the creation of dynamic digital replicas—digital twins—that mirror the physical manufacturing environment in real time. This approach allows for the continuous monitoring and optimization of machining operations, ensuring that each component meets stringent quality standards. Moreover, these digital twins facilitate the storage and linkage of manufacturing data to downstream performance metrics, providing invaluable insights into how components behave in the field.

This capability not only enhances product reliability but also accelerates the development cycle by enabling predictive maintenance and informed design iterations. Through its collaborative model, CCAM empowers its members and partners to harness these advanced digital tools, fostering innovation and maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape.

Building and Activating Ecosystems to Support Onshoring of Essential Pharmaceutical Supply Chains

The U.S. Economic Development Administration designated the Richmond–Petersburg region—led by the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing—as an Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Tech Hub, one of 31 inaugural designations under the CHIPS and Science Act. Focused on reshoring API and drug manufacturing through innovative hybrid and continuous-flow technologies. CCAM plays a central role by advancing process intelligence through smart, data-driven production methods that integrate advanced sensing, automation, and machine learning to improve efficiency, ensure quality, and accelerate process validation. These innovations support faster, more resilient drug manufacturing while also strengthening supply chain security.

The hub brings together more than 29 partners from industry, academia, workforce groups, and government to catalyze commercialization, infrastructure readiness, and workforce training—projecting up to 5,500 new biopharma jobs in the next decade. This designation unlocks eligibility for up to $75 million in federal implementation funds and positions the region as a national model for innovation, economic growth, and the future of medicine.

Developing a Roadmap For the Adoption of Digital Thread Technology

CCAM is spearheading efforts to modernize digital supply chains, enhancing resilience, scalability, and efficiency for its members and partners.

In collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), CCAM developed a comprehensive technology roadmap aimed at strengthening the U.S. manufacturing supply chain through the implementation of digital thread technologies. This roadmap identifies critical weaknesses and gaps in digital thread technology across sectors such as aerospace, defense, energy, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals, providing a tangible, actionable, industry-driven document to guide research and enable effective adoption of digital thread technology throughout the extended supply chain .

By addressing challenges like data silos, system interoperability, and real-time data access, CCAM’s roadmap facilitates improved operational efficiency, quality, and responsiveness to disruptions, ensuring that its stakeholders remain at the forefront of innovation in an increasingly digital manufacturing landscape.
